Why Democrats?

Did you know that the prefix “demo” means “common people?” A democrat is a person who believes in the rule of the people. If you think people should have a say in the laws that are passed, then you may be a democrat.

Democracy in a political sense promotes the rule of common people instead of the rich or elites. Democracy assumes that every person should have a say in choosing who gets to represent them in government.  It assumes that every person should be involved in promoting their own rights.  A Democrat is a person who believes in democracy and advocates democratic principles.

The Democratic Party believes in social equality, protecting the environment, egalitarianism, and strengthening our country’s social net.  Democrats generally support voting rights and minority rights, including LGBTQ rights; the presence of distinct cultural or ethnic groups within our communities; and separation of the state from religious institutions.

The Democratic Party of Oregon (DPO) affirms that every person is guaranteed rights to life, liberty, equity, and the pursuit of happiness. In exercising these rights, the DPO is respectful of the interdependent web of life on this planet.
